As writer Brian Michael Bendis wraps his X-franchise run in concert with the universe-ending Secret Wars, the flavor of “character spotlight” issues hangs heavy. There’s only so many installments left for everybody to tell their respective stories – every panel and page needs to count like never before. Yet, creators and fans alike have favorites and almost by public decree, former BFF’s Kitty Pryde and Illyana Rasputin embark on a delightful side-story that is as much winking retro salute as it is affirmingly forward-facing. ALL NEW X-MEN #38 Review: “Whose Crossover Is This Anyway?”
Shipping out of sequence to accommodate the currently in-progress “Black Vortex” event story, the latest issue of All-New X-Men is the weightiest and most gripping chapter to date. Brian Michael Bendis delivers a solid script, sure enough, but the real accolades go to the art team. Until now, the adventure trades as a fairly light-hearted deep-space heist/romp team-up of the X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy but that all changes heading into Sorrentino-country! With issues more often than not intentionally structured as components of a greater whole, Brian Michael Bendis’s distinct writing style often cut both ways. The latest issue of All-New X-Men is a great example of this, offering twenty pages of bridge with very little landing as Jean Grey teams up with Ultimate Spider-Man Miles Morales… and Jean Grey. Battle of the Atom Overview
The fiftieth anniversary of the X-Men was, of course, an event to be celebrated! In 2013, the current stable of main X-Men writers – Jason Aaron, Brian Bendis, and Brian Wood – got together to write up the celebratory event.
