There’s a prevailing theme in comics coverage this year that Marvel Comics are in a state of unrelenting disaster. Marvel has done little to assuage these fears, with PR disaster after PR disaster, and an uncanny mutant ability to stick a foot directly in a mouth.
In truth, it’s been a startling fall from grace for Marvel since the conclusion of 2015’s Secret Wars – actually since October 2016, when Marvel bewilderingly decided to release the start of All-New All-Different Marvel 3 MONTHS before Secret War had even ended. After spending the vast majority of the 2010’s in control of the Big 2 power rankings, and watching DC Comics bumble through (an increasingly underrated) New 52, Marvel found themselves directionless and without a map in 2016. After five Spider-Man movies (and a Captain America 3: Civil War appearance), the Vulture’s finally ready to make his first cinematic appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Sure, good old Adrian Toomes was reportedly going to be played by John Malkovich in the apocryphal Spider-Man 4 (directed by Sam Raimi), but the wait for Michael Keaton and Iron Man cameos appears to have been worth it.

DC has the longest running history in comics, with a library full of brilliant characters and stories dating back to Superman’s first appearance in 1938. The thing about 1938 is literally nobody remembers what it was like then.
