Talk about well timed. Coupling this week’s celebration of original creator Jack Kirby’s birthday with the upcoming launch of ABC-TV’s “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” third season, now is really the perfect moment to shine the spotlight on the super-spy institution. However, this current installment (cover-billed as an “Extra-Sized 50th Anniversary Extravaganza!”) isn’t just a shameless plug or a nostalgic trip down memory lane. No sir, somehow it succeeds in masterfully folding these distinct agendas into something much, much more.

Concluding his five-part “Spiral” storyline, veteran Spider-scribe Gerry Conway takes the wall crawler on yet another run around the endless loop of power and responsibility. Plagued with a few logical disconnects and some murky depictions, it’s an entertaining enough ride but like any carnival loop-de-loop, it’s maybe best not to stare too closely into the gears of the machine. Although this week’s installment hits another talk-heavy interlude, it is decidedly not a rehash of the “shock pathos” treatment from the third issue. God Emperor Doom is now covering the tracks of his kill-crazy rampage and showing increasing signs of reverting to his super-villain roots.
