New Krakin’ Krakoa Reviews: Empyre – X-Men #2 & Giant-Size Fantomex #1

August 6, 2020 by Dave Leave a Comment

Episodes #67 and #69 of Krakin’ Krakoa are now live (ep #68 will go live this weekend! timing is hard!), as I review two new X-Men comics released this week, Empyre: X-Men #2 and Giant-Size X-Men: Fantomex.

Potential spoilers for discussed comics may follow! [Read more…] about New Krakin’ Krakoa Reviews: Empyre – X-Men #2 & Giant-Size Fantomex #1

Injustice: Year Zero Review!

August 5, 2020 by Zoe Tunnell 1 Comment

Injustice: Year Zero’s first three issues make for a confusing and muddled debut. Set a year before writer Tom Taylor’s original run on the wildly popular Injustice: Gods Among Us, the digital-first series introduces the Injustice universe incarnation of beloved World War 2 superhero team: the Justice Society of America.

These heroes give the series a split identity of reaching for the warm nostalgia of more heroic days gone by while also responding to the rise of real-world fascism in the years since Gods Among Us first debuted. The latter goal likely fueled by the use of fascist and totalitarian imagery and beliefs within Superman’s regime. Unfortunately, neither direction feels particularly well-realized and leads to an unsatisfying beginning for the title. [Read more…] about Injustice: Year Zero Review!

Krakin’ Krakoa #65: Vulcan’s Secrets Revealed! X-Men #10 Review

July 30, 2020 by Dave 2 Comments

X-Men #10 by Jonathan Hickman, Leinil Francis Yu and Sunny Gho is the first in-series Empyre event tie-in, and uses the Marvel Universe invasion of plant-alien Cotati on the Moon to dig into the secret mysterious of Vulcan, Gabriel Summers, the third Summers brother. There are some fascinating revelations here, a number of which connect to my Vulcan theories pitched way back in Krakin’ Krakoa #44, and what I’m predicting is a major X of Swords tease.

Today I’ll answer:

  • How does X-Men fit into the Empyre event?
  • What did we learn about Vulcan, and what does it mean for Krakoa and the Dawn of X?
  • What does this have to do with X of Swords?

Potential spoilers for discussed comics may follow!

Excellent Ideas & Squandered Execution: AQUAMAN by Deconnick and Rocha Review!

July 30, 2020 by Zoe Tunnell Leave a Comment

2018 was a significant year for Aquaman, both as a character and as a figure in the cultural consciousness. After spending decades best known as a useless punchline, Arthur Curry’s status in pop culture was overhauled entirely into that of a muscular, sea-soaked sex symbol thanks to the outrageously successful Aquaman film, starring Jason Momoa. In contrast, Aquaman had never suffered the same harsh reputation as a joke in the world of comic books, thanks to well-regarded runs from creators such as Peter David and Dan Abnett.

On top of his blockbuster debut, Arthur found himself under one of his biggest comic book spotlights yet, leading a crossover event with DC’s flagship Justice League series, titled Drowned Earth. Wanting to capitalize on the hype surrounding the 77-year old mainstay’s movie debut, DC Comics announced a new, high profile creative team to take over Aquaman following the crossover: Kelly Sue DeConnick, the writer who modernized Captain Marvel and led to the Marvel superhero’s current massive popularity, with Robson Rocha, a historically overlooked but very talented star within DC’s artist roster.

With one successful revamp of a longstanding superhero into a mega star under her belt, DeConnick seemed like a natural fit to overhaul the King of Atlantis for modern readers. Unfortunately, Aquaman has yet to live up to those lofty expectations, having nearly all of its exciting ideas weighed down with questionable execution. SENTIENT Team Interview With Jeff Lemire & Gabriel Walta!

July 24, 2020 by Dave 3 Comments

Sentient was one of my favorite comics of 2019, and the TKO Studios sci-fi mini is now a 2020 Eisner nominee for “Best Limited Series.” Creators Jeff Lemire, Gabriel Walta, Steve Wands and collaborators work to create an ambient, isolated space adventure with a mission gone horribly awry, and only children and their onboard artificial intelligence left to guide the vessel safely to a new homeland. It’s a gripping and occasionally heartrending read, with Walta’s gorgeous art and colors deliciously well-suited for the larger TKO Studios release format.

I had the chance to ask Lemire and Walta a variety of questions about the work in the wake of their Eisner recognition, and you’ll find their thoughts on the work below!
