Monsters, Mayhem, and Marvel Horror in The Rise of the Midnight Sons

July 29, 2021 by Sara Century Leave a Comment

Ghost Rider #31, written by Howard Mackie, art by Andy Kubert, Joe Kubert, and Gregory Wright, lettering by Janice Chiang

Lilith (the Mother of All Monsters!) has risen from her slumber, and a new group of antiheroes form to challenge this age-old threat. They are the loosely connected Midnight Sons, and each one of them will play a role in fighting off the demonic Lilith and her many horrifying children.

With an influx of scary villains, extreme action sequences, and earnest looks into a reluctant hero’s tortured inner world, the early days of the Danny Ketch Ghost Rider era infused contemporary superhero comics with a sort of hyper-violent neo-noir sensibility. This created a series that suited the overall vibe of Marvel Comics while featuring a uniquely sensitive and conflicted hero. Leading into Rise of the Midnight Sons, we’re following the path carved out by Danny Ketch’s earlier appearances, making this a rare crossover that successfully juggles the introduction of many new premises while remaining entrenched in a sense of undeniable history. The State of Star Wars (2021)

July 28, 2021 by Austin Gorton Leave a Comment

When Marvel re-acquired the license to create new Star Wars comics in 2015, they quickly launched a core group of series chronicling the adventures happening long ago in everyone’s favorite far away galaxy. As an added bonus, for the first time, following two decades of Dark Horse holding the license to make Star Wars comics (which, in turn, followed Marvel’s initial licensing of the characters back in the 70s), these stories would be considered canon, “official” continuations of the overall narrative depicted in the films & TV shows. Since then, the assorted Marvel Star Wars comic book series have been relaunched, renewed, and built out into their own little sub-universe of comic books. Now, as fans wait patiently for the next Disney+ series to launch and the next movie to start filming, it’s the perfect time to give the Star Wars comic book universe a chance.

But with so many different books out there, it’s not always clear where to start or what might suit your tastes. To help, here’s a brief rundown of each current series, when it takes place, what it’s about, what creators are involved, to help guide your journey. May the Force be with you! The Old 52: Superman Unchained – Lost In The Darkness

July 27, 2021 by David Mann 2 Comments

Remember how Scott Snyder (emerging into the height of his popularity) and Jim Lee (in his final longform comics project) launched a new Superman ongoing for the character’s 75th anniversary? Remember how it was unceremoniously demoted to a nine issue miniseries (over the course of eighteen months) because by the end no one much cared, and now it’s almost entirely forgotten? Have you ever really let that set of facts sit in your head in all its plain absurdity? [Read more…] about The Old 52: Superman Unchained – Lost In The Darkness

Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Captain America Retrospective Review!

July 26, 2021 by David Bowen 4 Comments

“I’m loyal to nothing, General—except the dream.”

—Captain America in Daredevil #233 by Frank Miller

“The dream is old. Older than Captain America. And the dream is what matters. Even if the shield is tarnished, even if Captain America is tarnished … the dream is eternal.”

—Daughter of Liberty “Hera,” Sharon Carter, in Captain America #12 by Ta-Nehisi Coates

With Captain America #30 out now, Ta-Nehisi Coates, one of our all too few critical public intellectuals in the 21st-century United States, the Star-Spangled Avenger sees his most meaningful and entertaining era since Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting arrive at a conclusion that feels both classic yet timely. This comes as no surprise to readers who have followed the series over the past three tumultuous years, since July 4, 2018; throughout the run, Coates’ taut storytelling and clear meditative narration struck a fine balance between inspiring hopefulness and sobering clarity.

Coates’ Cap run is a single narrative, an impressively taut thriller composed of several tight mini narratives building to an 11-issue multi-climax arc. The thematic and narrative consistency is refreshing, especially for a Marvel title. But the pandemic, of course, knocked everything sideways, and there was a five-month gap after issue #20. And in 2021, there were gaps in January, April, and June. Already, this is a book meant to be read in one or two sittings, which, as of July 7th, fans can now enjoy doing. And two back-to-back reads are recommended to really sink into this epic—because while the action flows relentlessly, there is so much going on between Steve and Sharon’s respective narrations and the loving and knowing use Coates makes of classic characters and continuity.
