The New Animated Marvel TV Plan: Goodbye ‘Earth’s Mightiest,’ Welcome Avengers Assemble!

March 8, 2013 by Dave 2 Comments

So here’s a mildly weird one: Marvel’s new animated series announcement seems to be erasing the existence of Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

The actual announcement featured today on Marvel’s website declares the coming of Marvel’s Avengers Assemble! and Marvel’s Hulk & The Agents of S.M.A.S.H.

Avengers-Assemble-Animated-Marvel
Avengers… Reassemble!

On the surface this is very cool – Marvel’s re-branding their Avengers animated programming to connect a little more clearly with the BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE (had you guys heard the film did well?), and they’re introducing a show featuring Hulk, She-Hulk, Red-Hulk & Skaar.

Where can I sign?

This gets a little weird, though, when you consider Marvel already has Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes airing on Disney XD (the same location these ‘new’ shows will air).

At first I assumed Marvel was just changing the name to match the movie (along with Hawkeye’s costume, Cap’s Skrull-ishness, etc). But then I read this bit from their blurb:

Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye and Black Widow: “Marvel’s Avengers Assemble” reunites the team, along with newcomer Falcon, marking the first time in animation history this distinct team of heroes will join forces.

Unless this press release is very specifically talking about the first time this team includes Falcon (have to wonder what this means for his Marvel Cinematic U inclusion, too), it seems to be forgetting we had two full seasons of these heroes fighting everyone from Kang to Dr. Doom.

Apparently news broke last summer that Avengers EHM was cancelled, but it came as news to me. Also seems a little bit odd that Avengers Assemble is pretending Earth’s Mightiest never happened. Then again, I wouldn’t want to have to explain Secret Invasion to a new audience of Avengers’ fans either.

Looking forward to seeing if these new shows can match the fun of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (it was no Sensational Spider-Man, but what really is?).

So what do you think? Mistake to cancel Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, or a smart move to tie the show more into the Marvel Cinematic U? And is this Hulk show going to be the coolest, or a historic bust?
