X-23 (All-New Wolverine) Reading Order! Where to Start With X-23 Comics?

December 6, 2016 by Dave 3 Comments

X-23 is one of the rare Marvel – or even comic book – characters who debuted outside of the comic books and only later made her first appearance inside the comic book Marvel universe.

X-23, aka Laura Kinney, was actually created by Craig Kyle for the X-Men: Evolution TV series, and the idea was so strong she has since become a major part of the X-Men, Wolverine, and Marvel Universe fabric.

In my opinion X-23 is easily one of the best new Marvel concepts of the 2000’s, expanding on the Wolverine and Weapon X legacy with a character who has grown tremendously throughout the below comics!

X-23 Reading Order

X-23 in Target X

I) X-23 Origins and First Teams

X-23: The Complete Collection Vol. 1

The first X-23 mega collection gives you the origins of Laura Kinney from Craig Kyle and Chris Yost, in the pages of the first two six issue X-23 miniseries.

Note that The Complete Collection Vol. 1 concludes with the first three issues of Marjorie Liu’s excllent 2010 run on X-23. I’d recommend holding off on these issues until you’re ready to start The Complete Collection Vol. 2, and to pair these first three issues with Wolverine Goes to Hell by Jason Aaron.

Collects: X-23 (2005) 1-6, X-23: Target X 1-6, Captain Universe/X-23 1, X-23 1, X-23 (2010) 1-3

NYX: The Complete Collection

Technically, X-23 makes her first Marvel Comics in the pages of NYX, although calling this an “X-23 Comic” is a bit of stretch. For my money, this read is only essential for the true X-23 die-hard.

Collects: NYX 1-7, NYX: No Way Home 1-6

Uncanny X-Men – The New Age Vol. 2: The Cruelest Cut

Uncanny X-Men – The New Age Vol. 3: On Ice

X-23 meets the X-Men!

Collects: Uncanny X-Men 450-461

Marvel Team-Up Vol. 1: The Golden Child

Robert Kirkman (of Walking Dead fame!) writes this Spider-Man team-up comic, which features one of Laura’s earliest appearances as X-23 in Marvel Team-Up #5.

Collects: Marvel Team-Up (2004) #1 to #6

New X-Men: Childhood’s End, Vol. 1

New X-Men: Childhood’s End, Vol. 2

New X-Men: Childhood’s End, Vol. 3

New X-Men: Childhood’s End, Vol. 4

New X-Men: Childhood’s End, Vol. 5

Craig Kyle and Chris Yost bring X-23 into the New X-Men (not to be confused with Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s The New X-Men – this is the series that follows in 2005). X-23 brings a new dynamic to the new, young school of X-kids, sparking one of the best X-sagas of the mid-2000’s.

Collects: New X-Men #20 to #43

X-23 on X-Force

II) X-23, Full Fledged X-Event Team Member

Messiah CompleX

X-23 plays a minor role in the biggest X-event of the mid-2000’s, but the event sets up just about everything to come for the remainder of the decade. You can find a full guide with Comic Book Herald’s Messiah CompleX reading order.

X-Force by Craig Kyle & Chris Yost: The Complete Collection Volume 1

Following the events of Messiah CompleX, Laura is hand-picked by Wolverine to join X-Force, in one of the most underrated Marvel books of the late 2000’s.

Collects: X-Force (2008) 1-13, X-Force Special: Ain’t No Dog, Material From X-Force Annual (2010) 1

X-Force/Cable: Messiah War

Collects: X-Men: The Times and Life of Lucas Bishop #1-3, Cable #11-15, X-Force #14-16, X-Force/Cable: Messiah War One-Shot

X-Force by Craig Kyle & Chris Yost: The Complete Collection Volume 2

Collects: X-Force (2008) 17-25; X-Necrosha: The Gathering; X-Force: Sex & Violence 1-3; Material From X Necrosha, X-Force Annual (2010) 1

X-Men: Second Coming

Laura’s time on X-Force concludes with the conclusion to Messiah CompleX, X-Men: Second Coming. One of the more satisfying X-events in the modern era.

Collects: X-Force (2008) #26 to #28

X-23 vs Daken

III) X-23’s Longest Solo Title and Avengers Connections

X-23: The Complete Collection Vol. 2

Marjorie Liu wrote my favorite Black Widow comic book arc of the 2000’s, and also wrote the longest solo run on X-23 for Marvel.

Note that the Complete Collection Vol. 2 jumps ahead to a preview for the All-New Wolverine Saga. You’ll want to hold off reading this until you reach the next section of the X-23 reading order.

Collects: X-23 (2010) 4-21, Daken: Dark Wolverine 8-9; Material From Wolverine: The Road To Hell 1, All-New Wolverine Saga 1

Venom: Circle of Four

In a testament to X-23’s growing popularity, she joined Ghost Rider, Red Hulk, and Agent Venom for a supernatural war against hell.

Collects: Venom 10-13, 13.1-13.4, 14

Avengers Academy: Second Semester

While we never got quite as far as X-23: Avenger, joining the Avengers Academy is pretty darn close. Laura joins another school of gifted youngsters, only this time it sets her up for Marvel Now’s take on Hunger Games…

Collects: Avengers Academy #21-28

Avengers Arena, Vol. 1: Kill or Die

Avengers Arena is quite deliberately a Hunger Games rip-off, but also a consistently fascinating series with perpetually high stakes. As you’d expect, a killing field represents a unique kind of challenge for X-23.

Collects: Avengers Arena 1-6

Avengers Arena, Vol. 2: Game On

Collects: Avengers Arena 7-12

Avengers Arena Volume 3: Boss Level

Collects: Avengers Arena 13-18

X-23 All New Wolverine

IV) All-New All-Different Wolverine

Death of Wolverine Reading Order

2014’s “Death of Wolverine” event sets the stage for a more prominent role for X-23 in the Marvel Universe. I recommend the full Death of Wolvy reading order above to explore X-23’s reaction and role in titles like Logan’s Legacy.

For more old school Wolvy, you can check out Comic Book Herald’s Wolverine reading order.

All-New Wolverine Vol. 1: The Four Sisters

All-New All-Different Marvel marks the start of new territory for Laura Kinney, as she adopts the mantle of Wolverine. Writer Tom Taylor (of DC’s Injustice fame) brings his unique blend of action and comedy to one of Marvel’s most interesting ongoing titles through 2015 and 2016.

Collects: All-New Wolverine 1-6

All-New Wolverine Vol. 2: Civil War II

Collects: All-New Wolverine 7-12

All-New Wolverine Vol. 3: Enemy of the State II

Collects: All-New Wolverine 13-18

All-New Wolverine Vol. 4: Immune

Collects: All-New Wolverine #19 to #24

All-New Wolverine Vol. 5: Orphans of X

Collects: All-New Wolverine #25 to #30

Collects: All-New Wolverine #31 to #35

X-Men Red Vol. 1: The Hate Machine

Collects: X-Men Red #1 to #5, X-Men Red Annual #1

X-Men Red Vol. 2

Collects: X-Men Red #6 to #11

V) Return of X-23

X-23 Vol. 1: Family Album

Collects: X-23 #1 to #6

Create article but what does ‘All-New Wolverine Saga 1’ mean in the second complete collection? Is that actually ‘All-New Wolverine Vol. 1: The Four Sisters’?

Actually Avengers Arena is an ode to Battle Royale, which Hunger Games drew inspiration from, or they probably ripped them off. If you haven’t seen that movie I highly recommend it. It is more bloody and more action packed than the Hunger Games. Also very underrated film, also the cover for Avengers Arena is an ode to Battle Royale.
