Fall of the Hulks & World War Hulks (Guide Part 12.1)

After the enormity of Planet Hulk and World War Hulk, Marvel scaled back the Hulk sized events for nearly two years. Sure there was Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuiness introducing the Red Hulk, and the seemingly never-ending mystery of his identity in Hulk #1, alongside a range of WWH Aftersmash books including Skaar: Son of Hulk (from Planet Hulk and WWH architect Greg Pak himself) and The Incredible Hercules.

Nonetheless, Marvel readers all know Hulk is strongest there is, and well, there ain’t a whole lot of true Hulk in those books (even if his shadow is everywhere). As great as World War Hulk was on a pure mayhem and SMASH! scale, there has to be more to the Hulk’s return to earth.

And that’s exactly what we get in Fall of the Hulks and World War Hulks.

The concept is beautifully hulk – the strongest evil minds in the Marvel Universe vs. the strongest there is. The villainous Intelligentsia (The Leader, MODOK, Red Ghost, the Mad Thinker, Wizard… and friends!) plot to take out the eight smartest men in the world. Only the Red Hulk and Bruce Banner can stop them. Enter Fall of the Hulks and World War Hulks!

Hulk: World War Hulks – Collects Hulk #22 to #24

Fall of the Hulks Reading Order

Fall of the Hulks: Alpha #1

Fall of the Hulks: Gamma #1

Fall of the Hulks: MODOK #1

Extremely cartoonish, digital only release. It’s a humorous take on MODOK’s involvement with the Intelligencia, far from an essential read, but if you do, it goes here.

Hulk #19

Fall of the Hulks: Red Hulk #1

Incredible Hulks #606

Hulk #20

Incredible Hulks #607

Fall of the Hulks: Red Hulk #2

Fall of the Hulks: The Savage She-Hulks #1

Fall of the Hulks: Red Hulk #3

Hulk #21

Incredible Hulks #608

Fall of the Hulks: The Savage She-Hulks #2

Fall of the Hulks: The Savage She-Hulks #3

Fall of the Hulks: Red Hulk #4

Chronologically, the events of Red Hulk #4 all take place before Hulk #21 and Incredible Hulks #608. It’s a lot of flashback to the Red Hulk’s time with the Intelligentsia, including some really fun alternate future scenario’s played out by the Leader and company. I actually prefer reading the issue as an epilogue to Fall of the Hulks, setting up the Intelligencia’s true plan and the Hulks mysterious machinations to prevent them.

World War Hulks

World War Hulks #1

World War Hulks: Hulked Out Heroes #1

Despite the implication that this series will show off a Hulked-out Marvel Universe, it’s actually just a bizarre Deadpool (Well, Hulkpool) time travel story. Pretty easily skippable depending on your affinity for Deadpool and Fantastic Four #5 (the first Doctor Doom story and the one where The Thing pretends to be Blackbeard… no really, it’s super relavant).

World War Hulks: Hulked Out Heroes #2

Hulk #22

Incredible Hulks #609

World War Hulks: Spider-Man & Thor #1

World War Hulks: Spider-Man & Thor #2

World War Hulks: Wolverine & Captain America #1

World War Hulks: Wolverine & Captain America #2

Hulk #23

Incredible Hulks #610

Incredible Hulks #611

Hulk #24
