History of the Batman, pt. 1: Batman’s Literal Year One

February 8, 2015 by Londyn Jackson 1 Comment

Created in light of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s practically invincible character Superman, editor Vin Sullivan asked Bob Kane to come up with a character that would be as popular as the Man of Steel. Inspired by pulp fiction comics and Leonardo Da Vinci’s flying machine, Kane created the Bat-Man. Once ghostwriter Bill Finger put his influence into this new hero, Bat-Man changed into a dark masked vigilante, donning a grey and black cape and cowl with small swept ears. Different as night and day, the ordinary human with extraordinary mastery of science and martial arts debuted in Detective Comics #27 in May of 1939 (cover date). AVENGERS #41 Review: “The Other Shoe”

February 6, 2015 by Matt Lehn 2 Comments

Continuing the recent trend of stealth-releasing chapters of Jonathan Hickman’s epic, this week’s Avengers has the added distinction of being the most speculated installment yet. Curiously featuring the repurposed cover to 2002’s Ultimates 1, there is actually very little interior content that could otherwise prepare the reader for what’s in store without ruining massive surprises. Narratively, it’s a bit of a sidestep from the usual splintered dysfunction of Earth’s Mightiest, focusing instead on other aspects just as integral to the bigger picture of the upcoming Secret Wars. My jaw dropped. I’m not guaranteeing that your jaw will drop when you read Batman #38, I’m just saying that mine did. I’ve read every issue of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman run, and this is easily one of the best. [Read more…] about BATMAN #38 Review: “The Gods Must Be Crazy (Quilt)”

X-Men Chronology: Mike Carey’s run

January 27, 2015 by Thomas Bacon 1 Comment

When you look back at the history of the X-Men, certain writers stand out.  These are writers who settled down into the book, who produced definitive works that shaped and transformed the X-Men mythos, and who developed much of the continuity fans love.  Top of the list is the legendary Chris Claremont, who – between 1975 and 1991 – penned no less than 186 consecutive issues.  But in second place is Mike Carey, who took over the helm of ‘X-Men’ in 2006, and left in 2011, having penned a 73-issue series.
