[Read more…] about Marvel Year Twenty-Five: 1986 Variant Cover BIt’s entirely possible that history will look back at 2020 (and history will have plenty of reason to look back on this year) as the year that broke DC Comics. It’s definitely too early to proclaim absolute doom with unwavering certainty, but for the first time in a very long time, the future of DC Comics as a publishing entity – as one half of comics Big 2 – is in serious doubt.
Tremendous layoffs struck DC Comics in August 2020, as the effects of the ATT / Warner Brothers merger fully materialized. The publishing line was gutted, and despite Jim Lee’s efforts to assuage concerns that this is the end of DC Comics, there’s little use denying the publisher won’t be the same for some time. I love comic book ephemera from Marvel’s Silver Age, the early 60’s through early 70’s when Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Stan Lee and the mighty Marvel bullpen were turning Marvel Comics into one of the biggest pop culture phenomena in the world. Teen Titans: Beast Boy is a strange creature. Where its titular lead is constantly changing and shifting, the young adult graphic novel from Kami Garcia, Gabriel Picolo, Rob Haynes, David Calderon, and Gabriela Downie remains stuck in a very familiar shape. Equal parts coming-of-age teen drama and superhero origin story, Beast Boy offers a beautifully drawn but bland experience that does little to stand out from the crowd.
Following up on 2019’s critically and commercially successful Teen Titans: Raven graphic novel, Beast Boy stars the fan-favorite Teen Titans member in a standalone setting where he has yet to discover his superpowers. Instead of worrying about the fate of the world, Beast Boy’s Garfield Logan is more concerned about putting on muscle and finally kissing the hottest girl in school.
