Are the X-Men Villains Now? | Krakin’ Krakoa #68

August 9, 2020 by Dave 3 Comments

Even during the promotional build to Jonathan Hickman’s takeover as the “Head of X,” there was theorizing that Charles Xavier – if that even was our once and future Professor X, adorned in his Maker-esque Cerebro helmet at all times – and the X-Men would be taking on a more sinister, antagonistic role in the Marvel Universe.

Through House of X / Powers of X, the establishing of Krakoa as a sovereign mutant nation, and now one year into the Dawn of X the question has persisted: Are the X-Men villains now?

I see this thinking and question pop up with virtually every new episode of Krakin’ Krakoa and given the persistence – and the degree to which this progression clearly bothers some readers – I think it’s worth laying out the case for why readers would think this, and why I ultimately wholeheartedly disagree with the assertion.

Episodes #67 and #69 of Krakin’ Krakoa are now live (ep #68 will go live this weekend! timing is hard!), as I review two new X-Men comics released this week, Empyre: X-Men #2 and Giant-Size X-Men: Fantomex.

Krakin’ Krakoa #65: Vulcan’s Secrets Revealed! X-Men #10 Review

July 30, 2020 by Dave 2 Comments

X-Men #10 by Jonathan Hickman, Leinil Francis Yu and Sunny Gho is the first in-series Empyre event tie-in, and uses the Marvel Universe invasion of plant-alien Cotati on the Moon to dig into the secret mysterious of Vulcan, Gabriel Summers, the third Summers brother. There are some fascinating revelations here, a number of which connect to my Vulcan theories pitched way back in Krakin’ Krakoa #44, and what I’m predicting is a major X of Swords tease.

Today I’ll answer:

  • How does X-Men fit into the Empyre event?
  • What did we learn about Vulcan, and what does it mean for Krakoa and the Dawn of X?
  • What does this have to do with X of Swords?

Potential spoilers for discussed comics may follow!

Krakin’ Krakoa #62: Empyre X-Men #1 Review – Scarlet Witch’s Resurrection Protocols

July 22, 2020 by Dave Leave a Comment

When I asked Jonathan Hickman at 2020 C2e2 about writing X-Men Empyre tie-ins he seemed uniquely excited about the storytelling chances the mega event afforded him, and now we can see why in the deliriously fun Empyre: X-Men #1.

Today I’ll answer:

  • How does X-Men tie into Marvel’s Empyre event?
  • What role does Scarlet Witch play in the story, and what does her presence mean for mutant resurrections?
  • What is X-Corp and why does it matter?

Krakin’ Krakoa #60: What Is The Anti-Krakoa? | X-Force #10 Review

July 8, 2020 by Dave Leave a Comment

X-Force #10 finds the mutant covert ops team deep in the heart of Terra Verde, where their sentient plant techno life has captured complete control of the nation, and is threatening to expand. It’s a welcome return to form for Benjamin Percy, Joshua Cassara, Guru-eFX and the creative team, as X-Force continues a top tier run through the Dawn of X.

Today I’ll answer:

  • What is the Anti-Krakoa, and what does it mean for X-Force handling threats to Krakoa?
  • Can Beast be redeemed?
  • Should Jean Grey stay on X-Force?

Potential spoilers for discussed comics may follow!
