I) Classic Thor – Essential Thor Stories From the Past

Thor Epic Collection: The God Of Thunder

Collects: Journey Into Mystery (1952) 83-109

Robert Bernstein, Stan Lee, Larry Leiber, Al Hartley, Don Heck, Jack Kirby, Jo Sinnott- 15 October 2014

The debut of the Mighty Thor from King Kirby and Stanly the Manly. Some of my favorite 60’s Marvel comics, and a fairly astonishing debut of Asgard and Thor in the Marvel Universe. If you start down this path in Marvel Unlimited, note that Journey into Mystery becomes just plain “Thor” after issue #125. So Journey into Mystery #125 leads to Thor #126. Comics!

II) Heroes Reborn: The Return of Thor – 1998 to 2004

Thor: First Thunder

#1 – #5

First Thunder is actually a 2010 miniseries. I place it this early in the guide because it works as sort of a Season One Thor story, from the early days of the Thunder God.

Thor, Vol.2 #1

Collects Thor #1-8, And Peter Parker: Spider-Man #2

You don’t have to start all the way at the beginning of this era of Thor to be prepared for Avengers Disassembled. I’ll lay it out so that you can, but this era is reliant on your love of all things Asgard, and your desire to see all things to completion.

Thor by Dan Jurgens & John Romita Jr, Vol. 2

Collects Thor (1998) #9-13 And Thor Annual 1999

Thor, Vol. 3

Collects Thor #14-17, Iron Man #21-22, Peter Parker: Spider-Man #11, And Juggernaut: The Eighth Day

Avengers Disassembled: Thor

Collects Thor #80-85

For the entire event, here’s my Avengers Disassembled reading order.

Thor: Son of Asgard

Thor: Son Of Asgard #1-12

Following Thor Disassembled, we get a handful of miniseries that reflect back on Thor’s early days. A number of these are published even after the next section of Thor stories, but I place them here for reference. You do not need to read all of these to keep current on Thor continuity.

Thor: Blood Oath

#1 – #6

Loki

#1 – #4

Thor: Ages of Thunder

Thor: Ages Of Thunder (Apr 2008), Thor: Reign Of Blood (June 2008), Thor: Truth Of History (Oct 2008), Thor: Man Of War (Nov 2008), Thor God-Size Special (Dec 2008)

IV) Thor Returns! The J. Michael Straczynksi and Olivier Coipel Years (2007 to 2009)

Road to Civil War portion of the Thor Omnibus

Fantastic Four #536 – #537

You could just as reasonably turn to the actual Road to Civil War collection for these issues of Fantastic Four. These are surprisingly necessary components of Thor’s continuity.

Thor, Vol. 1

Thor #1-6 (July 2007 – Feb 2008)

Thor, Vol. 2

Thor #7 – #12 + #600 (March 2008 – Feb 2009)

Thor: Siege Aftermath

Thor #611-614 (June 2010 – Sept 2010)

Thor: The Mighty Avenger: The Complete Collection

Collecting: Thor The Mighty Avenger 1-8, Free Comic Book Day 2011

Important to clarify that Thor: The Mighty Avenger is the absolutely excellent (yet out of continuity) all ages Thor series from Roger Langridge. Highly recommended, but Matt Fraction’s “The Mighty Thor” is the in-continuity continuation of Thor’s story.

Valkyrie

#1

Thor: The Trials of Loki

Loki #1 – #4

Thor: God of Thunder Volume 1

Thor: God Of Thunder 1-11 (Nov 2012 – Aug 2013)

One of the best Thor runs ever begins here from Aaron and Ribic. God of Thunder is remarkably great, and a must for any Thor fan.

Journey Into Mystery Featuring Sif – Volume 1: Stronger Than Monsters (Marvel Now)

Journey Into Mystery 646-650

Journey Into Mystery Featuring Sif Volume 2: Seeds of Destruction (Marvel Now)

Journey Into Mystery 651-655

Thor: God Of Thunder 12-18 ( – Jan 2014)

Young Avengers by Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvie Omnibus

Young Avengers (2013) 1-15, Marvel Now! Point One 1 (Young Avengers Story)

More Avengers, this time to keep everyone in the loop on Kid Loki, the newest Young Avenger!

Loki: Agent of Asgard Volume 1: Trust Me

Loki: Agent Of Asgard 1-5 (Feb 2014 – June 2014)

In general I wouldn’t want to break up the 25 issue run on Thor: God of Thunder, but the first five issues of Loki: Agent of Asgard very deliberately occur prior to “The Last Days of Midgard” story arc.

Thor: God of Thunder Volume 4: The Last Days of Midgard (Marvel Now)

Thor: God Of Thunder #19 to #25 (Feb 14 – July 14)

Technically it makes sense here to save issue #25 until after Original Sin.

Uncanny Avengers Omnibus

Uncanny Avengers 1-25, 8Au , Annual 1

I’ve largely avoided mentions of Thor’s involvement with the Avengers to this point. You can check this out for an Avengers trade guide. For Marvel NOW! Avengers, you can check out the Hickman Avengers portion of my Secret Wars guide. I include Uncanny Avengers reading here since Rick Remender’s Thor has specific developments connected to God of Thunder. That’s hardly the only focus of Uncanny Avengers, but it’s a good full run for Marvel fans.

VII) An All New Female Thor & Unworthy Odinson

Original Sin: Thor & Loki: The Tenth Realm

Original Sin: Thor & Loki – The Tenth Realm 1-5

Original Sin

Original Sin is a Marvel Universe wide event with absolutely essential ramifications for Thor (Original Sin is a Jason Aaron penned Marvel event, and ties into his full Thor run as a result).

You may want to check out the Original Sin reading order for the complete saga.

Thor Volume 1: Goddess of Thunder

Collects: Thor #1 to #5

Jason Aaron’s Thor run continues here with a new Thor #1 (listed as Thor 2014 in Marvel Unlimited), and the biggest changes in the world of Asgard since Loki was but a lad!

Angela: Asgard’s Assassin Vol. 1: Priceless (Angela: Asgard’s Assasin)

#1 – #6 (Oct 2014 – March 2015)

Loki: Agent of Asgard Volume 2: I Cannot Tell a Lie

Loki: Agent Of Asgard 6-11

Issues #6 to #8 are Axis tie-ins. I wouldn’t recommend it, but you can see the full Axis reading order here.

Thor Volume 2: Who Holds the Hammer?

Thor Annual #1, #6 to #8

Loki: Agent of Asgard Vol. 3: Last Days

Loki: Agent of Asgard #12 to #17 (Secret Wars, Last Days tie-ins)

2015 Secret Wars

Battleworld: Thors

Jason Aaron’s “Thors” tie-in series plays a major role in the awesome 2015 Secret Wars event. The full saga is highly recommended reading, but this Thor tie-in works best with a Jason Aaron Thor reading order.

VIII) All-New All-Different Thor

Marvel’s post Secret Wars landscape continues the all-new direction for the Goddess of Thunder, before finally answering the questions left from Original Sin in the Unworthy Thor.

Mighty Thor Vol. 1: Thunder in Her Veins (Mighty Thor #1 to #5)

Vote Loki (Vote Loki #1 to #4)

Mighty Thor Vol. 2: Lords of Midgard (Mighty Thor #6 to #11)

Mighty Thor Vol. 3: Asgard/Shi’ar War (Mighty Thor #12 to #18)

The Unworthy Thor (Unworthy Thor #1 to #5)

Very cleanly ties in to Aaron’s run on Thor: God of Thunder and the mystery of Original Sin!

Mighty Thor Vol. 4: War Thor (Mighty Thor #20 to #23)

Marvel Generations: Thors

Continued in Marvel Legacy!

Mighty Thor Vol. 5

Collects: Mighty Thor #700 to #706

Mighty Thor: At the Gates of Valhalla

Collects: One-Shot

IX) Thor The God of Thunder Reborn

Marvel Legacy

Collects: One-Shot

While reading the Jason Aaron penned Marvel Legacy one-shot at the start of Thor’s “Fresh Start” era might seem counter-intuitive, it’s actually a much more effective primer for the continuation of Thor’s role in the pages of the Aaron’s Avengers than anything that happened during Marvel Legacy.

Thor Vol. 1: God of Thunder Reborn

Collects: Thor (2018) #1 to #6

Asgardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1

Collects: Asgardians of the Galaxy #1 to #5

  • I don't see the JIM 501-513 run with the forgotten gods that occurs parallel to the Jurgens run

BTW I'm not sure if you ever considered it but the presentation is very hard to follow, so a table would make it easier to checklist, maybe like wikepedia keeps track of collected edittions

  • I have been reading Thor since the 1964 Journey into Mystery with the Mighty Thor.
But, when Thor died in a crossover title a while back (Fear Itself maybe?), NOT in a "Thor" title, I completely stopped reading anything involved in a crossover - I don't even buy them - so all crossover titles are dead to me. To have a significant event for a character happen outside THAT character's book is unconscionable. Like when they killed NIghtcrawler in a NOT X-Men title.

I read comics. I don't read ABOUT comics. There is no chance I would ever get all the books involved in a crossover, so now when they have crossovers, I tell my comic shop to suspend my subscription until the crossovers are done.

  • Thank you so much for making this! I've been reading the comics on the Kindle and I'm having a hell of a job getting the storylines in order. It doesn't help that Amazon/Marvel don't see fit to list all of the books in order... but I guess if they did that, they couldn't collect the same episodes under different covers and make a few extra pennies that way.

  • I think you made a boo boo: in Loki AoA 8 the hammer gets picked up by Loki on the moon, but in Thor 1-5 it’s already been picked up and taken to kick frost giants ass by *spoilers*. It shouldn’t still be on the moon... right?

    • That is cause that includes issues 6-11, but volume 1 (which they mention above) includes issues 1-11... Confusing, I know! :D

  • Angela: Queen of Hel isn’t on here, and definitely affects the War of the Realms, as well as explaining the end of Unworthy Thor.

  • Hi,
After listening to your best comics ever podcast I decided to take a look at Thor but I'm not sure where to start. Should I start with Marvel NOW or go straight into Original Sin?

    • Hi Reece - I'd recommend starting at the top of Marvel Now! Those are excellent comics, and the entire run builds from there behind the same writer (Jason Aaron). So be it!

  • Wow I just finished the first volume of Thor: God of Thunder. It completely ignores the existence and possible contributions of other characters, especially when the story concerns gods, time and space travel. What did Tony Stark do? Seers across all cultures are blind to this genocide. Strange and other powerful reality altering characters were never mentioned. The whole thing happened in a vacuum of godly competence, foresight and contingency planning , save for Thor and his single solution to every problem: violence. So disappointing.

    • Volume 2 is even worse. it was so forced. 1. we aren't given an explanation on how Thor even knows this kind of magic. I don't believe he has ever used magic before and he is apparently skilled enough to trick both Malekith and the sorceress? it's a teleportation and illusion magic at the same time. I call bullshit. 2. the right to call a proxy for a crime sentence makes no sense. why don't you just say kings are above the law? 3. let's not even go into why the dark elves did a 180 on Malekith. why didn't they just join his forces right from the beginning? they've always feared him. and what will they benefit as a race if Malekith is made king? Thor already single-handedly defeated his entire army. 4. why the hell would the sorceress volunteer as proxy? Malekith has tons of loyal goons, willing to die for him. And if the council wanted him on the throne, one of them can volunteer. and for someone who wanted to kill Malekith and has no respect for the council and other tribes, she seemed awfully accepting of this result. 5. where is Hela in all of this? she would be the first one to hunt Malekith down, and it's well within her rights to do so. there's no need for league of realms in the first place! her Valkyries are more than capable of capturing Malekith.

  • I have been out of the comic stream for a while and I wanted to pick it back up.
I normally like to stick to the main story line and events and pick up trades for the Characters I like, Thor being one of the main one's I follow. But with all the reboots and soft reboots and now Legacy I am honestly confused on where what came out and where I should read certain books.

Since this is the Thor Page, I figure the best place to start.

For The Aaron Run of Thor I read up to the completion of Infinity and Original Sin.
So I have read Vol. 1 Goddess of Thunder.

But I am afraid its been so long I am missing somethings.

From the list above, I have
    Vote Loki
    The Unworthy Thor
Vol. 1 Thunder In Her Veins
    Vol. 2 Lords of Midgard
    Vol. 3 Asgard/ Shi'ar War
    Vol. 4 War Thor

And from my understanding this is where Legacy will take over with a Vol. 5 Trade?
I know Civil War II happened somewhere in here. I guess basically what I am hoping for is help with the timeline of the major events and where that falls in with the trades...Thanks for any help!

  • So, I've read the Simonson Thor volumes 1-3 and loved it. I also really liked Thor: Disassembled. The two flow well into each other since the right people are dead, but I'm at a cross roads here. Is it worth finishing up the Simonson run and messing up my mock-continuity with Disassembled (which flows perfectly into Civil War)? I doubt I'm going to want to go thru the Jurgens run, unless you highly recommend it?

So yeah, is Simonson vol 4,5 reallllly strong, and where does the Jurgens run rank in quality?

    • It's always worth reading the full Simonson Thor.

I can never really get into the Jurgens run much. Readers who enjoy Avengers family books from the late 90's through early 2000's tend to speak positively about it.

  • Hey, just wanted to let you know you missed one thing. Its not really Thor-Related, but you missed Angela: Queen of Hel (Journey to the Funderworld)
