Guide Part 7 (Civil War)

Marvel Heroes Collide in Civil War

While Avengers Disassembled started it all, and the likes of House of M and Secret Invasion certainly have their merits, Civil War is really the mega Marvel event of the 2000s. Hero vs Hero, Villains turned ‘Heroes,’ and answers to the age old question – Who would win in a fight: Captain America or Iron Man?

Whether we’re talking sales, attention, or sheer scale, Civil War was a watershed moment for event-driven comics (for better or worse). While it’s hardly the first ever event featuring tie-ins, Civil War marked the moment in the 2000’s were nearly every title was pulled into an event-specific plot. Don’t believe me? Check out the the official issue-by-issue reading order below compared to House of M. Just a bit more… expansive.

On top of all that, Civil War is the inspiration for the third Captain America Marvel movie, and the start of MCU Phase 3, featuring the crossover inclusion of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and just about every hero we’ve seen to date.

Certainly makes for some interesting reading (with the help of a good guide to navigate the continuity, of course). Below you’ll find my preferred order for the Civil War collected trades, followed by an issue by issue breakdown of every tie-in. As always, hope you enjoy! If you have questions or concerns, let me hear about it, or let’s talk on Twitter!

  • Hey CBH,

Thank you so much for pulling this together!

One query/issue I have at the moment is that I am following your trade paperback guide and buying up all the books…whilst doing this I’ve realised that Civil War: X-Men contains all the issues from Civil War: X-Men Universe.

I didn’t realise this before I purchased the books so now I have a quite pointless trade paperback, my bad really!

But just thought I’d share in case you wanted to capture this in your guide? And yes I know this is quite old now but people still refer to it to this day!

Thanks again as other than this slight issue it’s been a great guide to follow!

    • ...this reply ended up going on a bit, but it's all very relevant to the question posed by Adam in the UK

The CIVIL WAR: X-MEN (2nd. ed. 2016) TP does indeed contain both of the following books...
      + CIVIL WAR: X-MEN (2007) TP
      + CIVIL WAR: X-MEN UNIVERSE (2007) TP

Approximately 13 of the original 2007 editions were reprinted in 2015/16. Some, like CIVIL WAR: CAPTAIN AMERICA/IRON MAN put both original titles into the new edition. Some, like CIVIL WAR: X-MEN do not, leading to confusion on the part of readers. There are TWO books entitled CIVIL WAR: X-MEN, which look nearly identical (more creator names on the 2016 cover), which contain DIFFERENT CONTENTS.

CW: FRONT LINE was collected as CW: Front Line 1 & 2 TP (both 2007), CIVIL WAR: FRONT LINE TP (2016), and CIVIL WAR: FRONT LINE HC (2010) which collects the above plus 2 additional stories (CW: Choosing Sides and CW: The Return). Why? No one knows.

Some, like CIVIL WAR: MS. MARVEL (2015) were originally collected as part of their original run and titled accordingly... this was MS. MARVEL: Vol. 2: CIVIL WAR (2007). CIVIL WAR: NEW AVENGERS (2016) was originally NEW AVENGERS: Vol. 5: CIVIL WAR (2007). BLACK PANTHER, HEROES FOR HIRE and PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL also got new covers and new higher prices in 2016. Confusing? Absolutely.

Unfortunately this is NOT THE FIRST TIME our friends at MARVEL have done this, and I'm sure it won't be the last. SECRET INVASION is a nightmare (to collect). I can cite examples of books published with as many as 5 or more differing titles and covers ALL CONTAINING THE EXACT SAME THING. Ugh.

All dates and info picked directly from MARVEL.COM, although even trying to find them there can be "interesting" to say the least... the search function is no help at all. An OUTSTANDING resource is the online store MYCOMICSHOP.COM (formerly Lone Star Comics)... they have some of the most complete info I can find anywhere regarding comics and collected editions, complete with accurate cover pics, and their prices are very very hard to beat.

I've been heavily researching these things for the last 4 years, and now own 1400, almost exclusively TP. I too got tired of purchasing a book only to find I already had it in a different form. DC would have reprinted the original 20 or so books into about 8 larger volumes and given them new and different names like CIVIL WAR: VOLUME ONE, etc.

If you've read this far, thank you. I hope it's been some small bit of help.

  • Just get all this stuff and put it in the biggest burlap sack there is and have it hurled into space via some hi-tech vehicle and be done with it forever...

  • Where does house of M civil war fit into civil war or are they not related. They have the same font So it's confusing if not related. Thanks for putting this all together!

    • House of m civil war is not part of this civil war. It's only a name. It's part of the house of m tie ins. I've seen the "civil war" style cover and it feels like a cash grab.

  • Thanks for the great guide! Only thing I think need changing is maybe put The Confession before The Initiative #1. I think latter is a much better way to close out this guide, otherwise Ms. Marvel spoils what really happens to Cap at the end. Anyway thanks again

  • First, I have to say that I really enjoy the list that you have compiled. Although I haven't yet read the stories in your order yet, I would have to say even if there is something out of order you seem to be receptive to adjustments to your list, so others that get bent out of shape should relax and just enjoy the stories.

I do have some questions about the Civil War reading order. I have found other trades that have been included in other Civil War list and wanted to get your opinion: Should these titles be included and if so where? Have you considered them in the past and if so why did they get left off the list?

Civil War Prelude: New Warriors (2015) PB
    Cable & Deadpool (2004) PB Vol. 6
    Civil War Companion (2007) PB
Civil War: Marvel Universe (2007) PB
    X-Factor (2006) PB Vol. 2
Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America (2007) PB

Thanks for the time and I hope you can help me understand these questions.

  • I think Thunderbolts 106-109 happen during the Civil War too.. since Cap is involved.

  • X-Facotr #9 needs to be read earlier; Wolverine is still with the X-Men instead of off on a Vendetta.

  • Hey, Young Avengers/Runaways has spoilers for the Parental Guidance arc of Runaways, which you have in the part after Civil War.

Shouldn't issues 13-18 have come before Civil War, not after?

    • They definitely should be read before Civil War. Publication dates for those issues lead up to when they show up in Civil War too.

  • Hi! Curious where the Penance: Relentless 1-5 mini series fits in this. Do I just tack it on the end of this? I see the costume on the cover of frontline 10... also a couple other misc issues I have, not too sure where to place:
    1. Civil War files: who's side are you on? (Not to be confused with Choosing Sides)
    2.Civil War: Damage Report
    Thanks!

  • I'm trying to figure out what "Civil War: Fallen Son #1 – #5" is in your guide under Conclusion. At first I thought it was "Civil War: Fallen Son - The Death of Captain America #1-#5" but that's in your next reading guide. And the Daily Bugle Fallen Son special is only one issue, not 5. Can you help me out here?

  • I trusted your damned order and then Frontline #6 spoiled things for me for being in the wrong place on the list. Thanks a lot. Fortunately marvel.com has the official order.

    • I would have hated that as a reader myself. That sucks. If you can tell me where you think issues should be placed, I will definitely take a look at updating.

  • Been out of comic collecting since 1991 and use this site religiously to catch up on each story arch! Thanks for all the work!

Finished reading Civil War and most related issues prior to the movie and read after seeing it that Sharon Carter recites Cap's speech from Amazing Spider-Man #537 in the movie. Not remembering that speech, went to my ASM Civil War digital copy and saw it ended at 536! Any idea if 537 and 538 are in another Civil War related digital collection or will I have to buy the individual issues?

    Thanks again! Awesome site!

  • I would suggest reading Deadpool and cable 30 along with number 31 and 32, after issue three of the Civil War main title. The new secret identities of Cap And his team that are revealed by cable i'm not actually donned by the heroes until Civil War number three
