Wolverine & the X-Men #6 Review! Dark Phoenix vs. Apocalypse!

The last issue of the first arc since the All-New issue has arrived and now we can finally compare if Jason or Jason writes the series better. (Spoiler Alert: the answer’s Jason) Now I may be speaking for myself here but I felt like Jason Aaron run was a little inconsistent. I hoped with the relaunch and new creative team that would change but, it seem that they kept that along with the tone and cast of the book. I cut him a little slack seeing as he’s never written the X-Men before though. I also did love the ominous glimpses we had into the future.

This book was written by the man better known for his art Jason Latour and drawn by more people than I can count, Mahmud Asar, Pepe Larraz, David Messina and Massimiliano with Marc Deering. (Don’t laugh because I can’t count up to five) Believe it or not even with all those people they still needed the color artist Israel Silva, letterer VC’s Clayton Cowles and the cover artist Mahmud Asar and Marte Gracia.

Tomorrow Never Learns Chapter 6: A Fate Far Worse

This book picks up where the last left off with a terrible dilemma. Do you let kids be free even if they’re destined to hurt the world? As we’ve learned throughout this arc Quentin Quire is going to become Dark Phoenix and Evan Sabahnur will become the Apocalypse. Also just to top off this terrifying future the two of them are going to go to war. The battle that ensues as future Quentin Quire and his forces leaves the two young kids in very different places and leaves us all wondering if there’s a way to change the future. Present day Evan is left stronger after the battle with hope that he can deny his destiny with the help of Fantomex (Uncle Cluster). Sadly though my favorite young X-Man Quentin Quire is left feeling defeated and utterly terrified, as well being gifted a billion dollar company run by the people they just fought.

The future looks grim

Jason Latour does a pretty good overall job here. I really like the future that he shows us and honestly wish we could have spent some time in that world with him. I think that even though this might be his first time writing the X-Men he understands the characters. I also feel that he captures the fun that I want from the X-Men and hope he has some less serious stories planned to explore that side of the characters.

As I said above the art here is done by a large amount of people so I’ll refrain from listing them all again. The art here felt inconsistent as these multiple artist books always do. The only time multiple artist ever work in a book is when they’re brought in for specific scenes. Even the one scene per artist technique only works if all the art is good and here it wasn’t. The first half of this book took the brunt of the bad art. (Quentin’s never that ugly)

Doop lays the smackdown

Should I Buy?

As a full issue, it was what I was saying about the whole series, inconsistent. I mean if you can’t get me to say your book is amazing even with a great Doop appearance then something’s wrong. I’m sure it’ll find it’s footing along the way but I think that as far as X-books go it right in the middle of the pack.

CBH Score: 3.6/5 Stars

  • he does not become dark phoenix, you do not even pay attention, he is becoming just phoenix, not evil in any way, stop spreading false imagery

    • Hey man, sorry if my "Dark Pheonix" remark made you mad. I just saw an evil Quentin in the future with the pheonix force and made the assumption that it was Dark Pheonix. But your right that that's never stated that it's Dark Pheonix and Quentin in the current day is just becoming Pheonix. Sorry for not being more clear in the review.
