Neil Gaiman’s best comics, in complete chronological order.

The Comic Books of Neil Gaiman

All Star Future Shocks

Not strictly Gaiman, but you can find some of his earliest 2000 AD comics (4 stories to be exact) within this anthology.

Outrageous Tales from the Old Testament

Anthology graphic novel with Gaiman contributing humorous digs at organized religion, a much earlier and less serious exploration of the themes present in his prose work in American Gods.

Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean Graphic Novels

Violent Cases

The first widely known collaboration between Neil Gaiman and artist Dave McKean, Violent Cases is an extraordinary early graphic novel.

Signal to Noise

Mr. Punch

Black Orchid

Black Orchid marks the intersection between Gaiman and McKean’s graphic novels and Gaiman’s writing for DC Comics and Vertigo.

Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham on Miracleman

Miracleman, Book 1: The Golden Age

Following Alan Moore’s stupendous deconstruction of the Captain Marvel mythos on Miracleman (my third favorite comic book series of all time), Neil Gaiman wrote a fascinating follow-up series reflecting on the price of godhood and utopia. In my opinion, this run will not make very much sense, or have a similar payoff if you haven’t previously read Moore’s work.

Miracleman: Apocrypha

Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Reading Order

The Sandman Omnibus Vol. 1

Collects the first 37 issues of Sandman.

The Sandman Omnibus Vol. 2

Issues #38 to #75 of Sandman. The Omnibus editions of Sandman are glorious 1,000 page collections, that are actually still pretty reasonably priced. Nonetheless, the more affordable, trade paperback collections are listed below. Note that these contain the same comics as the omnibus…es? (Omnibi?)

The Sandman Vol. 1: Preludes & Nocturnes

The Sandman, Vol. 2: The Doll’s House

The Sandman, Vol. 3: Dream Country

The Sandman, Vol. 4: Season of Mists

The Sandman, Vol. 5: A Game of You

The Sandman, Vol. 6: Fables and Reflections

The Sandman Vol. 7: Brief Lives

The Sandman Vol. 8: World’s End

Sandman Vol. 9: The Kindly Ones

Sandman Vol. 10: The Wake

Death Deluxe Edition

Endless Nights (Sandman)

Sandman: Dream Hunters

The Sandman: Overture Deluxe Edition

Technically Sandman: Overture is written as a retroactive origin explaining the state of the lord of dreams prior to meeting him in Preludes and Nocturnes. You could make a case for reading it prior to Sandman Volume One, but personally, I prefer reading it with the Sandman run in the rearview mirror.

Big 2 Superhero Comics of Neil Gaiman

Angela (Spawn Series)

At the time of publication (1995), Angela fell pretty firmly within the Image Comics Spawn landscape, but she has since moved within the Marvel Universe.

Neil Gaiman’s Midnight Days Deluxe Edition

Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?

Marvel 1602

Neil Gaiman’s The Eternals

The Fantastic Comics of Neil Gaiman

The Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch

The Books of Magic

Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess’ Stardust

The Sleeper and the Spindle

Neil Gaiman’s The Last Temptation
